History of the educational institution
The oldest University of Central Asia was founded in 1930. It is a medical higher educational institution in Uzbekistan, engaged in education and training of students, medical workers, and scientists, as well as improving their qualifications.
The Institute is located in the most beautiful city of Samarkand, which has been a center of scientific thought and magnificent culture from time immemorial.
The history of the Samarkand State Medical Institute dates back to May 1930, when the Uzbek State Medical Institute was founded by the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of Uzbekistan No. 80 of May 7.
Over the years of the institute’s activity, more than 40,000 graduates have been trained and graduated.
Present time
Currently, SAMMI is a large medical university, in the structure of which there are six faculties and 65 departments. The Institute is located in the most beautiful city of Samarkand, which has been a center of scientific thought and outstanding culture from time immemorial.
In the Samarkand State Medical Institute, 712 scientists and teachers lead scientific and pedagogical activities, of which 624 are full-time. They include 58 professors, 65 doctors of sciences, 177 candidates of sciences, 152 associate professors.
The main goal of the Institute is to train highly qualified medical personnel meeting the requirements of world standards.
Stability and prestige of the Institute is determined by the development strategy, namely, a stable position in the group of higher education institutions-leaders in the training of health professionals, formed on the basis of the best traditions of quality teaching.

Samarkand State Medical Institute (SamMI) faculties:
- Faculty of General Medicine (organized in 1930);
- Faculty of Pediatrics (organized in 1963);
- Faculty of Medical Pedagogy (organized in 2005);
- Faculty of Dentistry (Faculty of Dentistry returned in 2017)
- Faculty of Higher Nursing (organized in 2005);
- Faculty of advanced training and professional retraining of specialists (organized in 1980);
- Faculty of Medicine and Prevention (organized in 2016)

The educational process at the institute
Kipping up with the times, the staff of the institute is sensitive to all the demands of reforms and transformations that are taking place in the education and health care system of Uzbekistan.
At the institute, to ensure a high-quality educational process, as well as to conduct research work, lecture halls, classrooms, and educational clinical laboratories, are equipped with the latest information basic technologies, multimedia projectors, video, and audio systems, and distance learning has been introduced. The educational process is supported by modern information and communication Internet technologies using electronic and modular learning systems (moodle.sammi.uz), which contain electronic teaching materials in all disciplines taught at the institute. For foreign students, a similar base has been created in English.
All of the above allows conducting classes at a high modern level that meets the world’s educational systems.
Medical base
SamMI has an impressive medical base. It includes clinics No. 1 and No. 2, designed for 375 beds and 200 beds, respectively, and equipped with the necessary and modern medical equipment. All medical and diagnostic institutions of the city of Samarkand are also a clinical base for students, where they subsequently undergo industrial practice.
The international cooperation
Cooperation is successfully carried out with many international and educational organizations in the USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Holland, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. SamMI graduates, after graduating from an educational institution, work fruitfully both in Uzbekistan and abroad in the USA, Israel, Germany, Russia. The staff of the institute is distinguished by a clear vision of new horizons in the development of medical education and science.
